Class Overview:

Employee, contractor, exempt, non-exempt, temporary, seasonal—worker classification can quickly become complicated. In this session, we’ll break down the key factors that determine whether a worker should be treated as an employee receiving Form W-2 wages or an independent contractor receiving Form 1099-NEC. We’ll also explore common employee types, including seasonal, temporary, and leased workers, and clarify the differences between exempt and non-exempt classifications. Finally, we’ll discuss how hourly and salaried pay arrangements fit into these classifications and the payroll and compliance responsibilities that come with having employees.

What You'll Learn:

  • Employee vs. Independent Contractor — Understand the key differences between employees and contractors and the factors used to determine proper worker classification.
  • Understanding Employee Types — Explore seasonal, temporary, leased, and other employee arrangements and how they can affect payroll responsibilities.
  • Exempt vs. Non-Exempt — Learn the difference between exempt and non-exempt employees, how salary and hourly pay fit into the equation, and why being salaried does not automatically mean an employee is exempt.
